Martial Art Styles relaunch! Every martial art style is different, which means not one style will fit everyone. In this world, every individual is unique with varying types of body and physical attributes - different belief systems will result in different training experiences.

This philosophy resulted in the fact that the best martial art style does not exist in this world. There isn’t any style that can beat other forms. It is always up to the individual to find what type of martial arts they are good at, and which form of martial arts will suite them.

For instance, take JKD (Jeet Kune Do), which was established by Bruce Lee. JKD is not exactly a style but rather a system of martial arts. In which you use whatever works for you. And learn to discard what does not fit. Hence you will learn to adapt to any situation using the best of what you know.

Martial Arts Origin

Martial arts are the systematic codes and traditions of combat practices. They are practiced for self-defense, competition, entertainment, physical fitness, and mental and spiritual development.

The term martial art has become primarily associated with the fighting practices of Eastern Asia. However, history suggests that an earlier version of martial arts was initially used as the combat systems in Europe.

The term martial derived from Latin, which means “arts of Mars.” Mars, being the Roman god of war. Throughout the years and the changing of the civilization’s course, martial arts have had several changes and have spawned several categories.

Martial arts nowadays can be categorized from the traditional martial arts to modern hybrid martial arts. Significant classification also includes Eastern Martial Arts and Western Martial Arts, in which both differences and similarities are worth exploring.

The techniques of martial arts fall into these two groups - armed and unarmed. From these groups, you can determine the types of weapons and types of combat.

The martial artist’s original intent also plays a vital role. You can practice martial art for combat sport, demonstration of forms, physical fitness, meditation, and self-defense.

External and Internal Martial Arts

When it comes to eastern or Asian martial arts, you can divide them into “external” and “internal” methods. External styles focus on strength, agility, and distinguished by fast and explosive movements. You can apply both methods on practical application, fighting, as well as modern styles adapted for competition.

External styles start with training concentrated on muscular power, speed, and application. Examples of external styles are Shaolin Quan and several Wushu forms that have great aerial strategies. Generally, we can classify that most Chinese martial arts styles are external styles.

Internal styles, on the other hand, focus on the application of elements, including awareness of the spirit, mind, and qi. Unlike with external, internal styles are all about using relaxed and calm leverage rather than crude muscular tension.

Parts of internal training include posture training, strengthening, and muscle flexibility. Internal styles are basically performed at a slower pace, unlike external style, where speed is the top priority.

This technique of performing forms at a slower pace is to enhance balance and coordination by slowly increasing the workload. This technique also requires the trainee to pay minute attention to their whole body and its weight as they perform the technique.

However, at an advanced level and in actual fighting, internal styles are performed at a fast pace. The main goal is to learn to coordinate the entire body in every motion, to stay calm, with deep, controlled breathing. When one achieves this goal, the martial art practitioners will learn how to accurately coordinate the motions of his body and breathing to maintain the perfect balance.

Internal styles are usually associated with legend and popular fiction, specifically the Sword-and-Sandal genre in the west and Wuxia in Chinese fiction.

When the scope of martial arts relies heavily on technical focus, it will depend on whether a person is armed or unarmed.

Armed and Unarmed Martial Arts

Unarmed martial arts can be generally be categorized into focusing on strikes. These, which focuses on striking while at the same time include grappling in their technique, are often described as hybrid martial arts. Sometimes these techniques are also known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

This classification can be dependable for self-defense, especially when the attack is unexpected, and you have nothing but your body as your weapon.

Examples of martial arts famous for striking are Boxing, Kickboxing, Savate, Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, and Sanshou. Meanwhile, examples of martial arts that focus on grappling are Jujutsu, Aikido, Hapkido, Judo, Sambo, and Wrestling – to name a few.

On the other hand, weapon-based traditional martial arts have a wide range of melee weapons, such as bladed weapons and pole weapons. Such traditional martial arts based on weapon fighting include Eskrima, Pencak Silat, Kobudo, and historical European martial arts.

Armed based martial arts usually design to kill instead of self-defense.

Martial Arts Disciplines

Martial arts styles can be categorized by application and intent as well. Several styles of martial arts in Asia also teach disciplines for medicinal practices. This method of learning is specifically widespread in traditional Indian martial arts, which may teach bone-setting and other components of traditional Indian medicine.

Sometimes, martial arts are associated with religion and spirituality. For example, Japanese traditional martial arts that focus on non-physical characteristics of the combat are often strongly influenced by Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. Aikido, for instance, is about the flow of energy and the fostering of peace that stems from a strong philosophical belief.

Also, traditional Korean martial arts emphasize the enhancement of an individual’s philosophical and spiritual growth. In Korean martial art styles such as Taekkyeon and Taekwondo, the primary focus is inner peace, which can be obtained only through individual meditation and training.

Martial arts as self-defense are a countermeasure in which an individual defends himself, his property, and others who may be in danger.

Self-defense, as legal justification, can be used as a person’s right to use force in critical circumstances. Given this, martial arts can be heavily involved with the intent of self-defense.

Some martial art styles teach how to escape from a gun situation, how to avoid a punch, while others train how to attack. Nowadays, several martial arts schools use a combination of martial arts styles and techniques.

Self-defense training is also often customized to match a person’s occupation, lifestyle, age, gender, and physical and mental capabilities. Martial art styles that can be used for self-defense when unarmed include Aikido and Kickboxing.

During the 1990s, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became prominent and justified to be effective in mixed martial arts competitions such as UFC. Jackie Chan and Jet Li are some celebrities who have successfully promoted Chinese martial arts in recent years.

Martial Arts Future

Martial art styles and techniques are not limitless. Strategies developed from combinations of styles from different origins of fighting systems continue to emerge. Furthermore, with the continuous discovery of Medieval and Renaissance fighting manuals, the applications of Historical European Martial Arts and other Western Martial Arts continue to become prominent across North America and Europe.

Martial arts also had a successful cross-over into sports when forms of sparring became competitive. Since then, martial arts such as Judo, Taekwondo, Boxing, Archery, Javelin, Wrestling, and Fencing have been included in The Summer Olympic Games.
